Barnett Newman (1905-1970 in New York) is one of the leading exponents of the New York School, and with his contribution to Color Field Painting a radical pioneer of a total artistic approach. As part of his engagement with Jewish mysticism he created meditative, "spiritual", large-scale easel paintings characterised by extreme reduction in favour of vertically organised, monochrome trails of colour. The sculptural œuvre he created in the 1960s contains only seven works: monumental constructions made of basic architectural elements in steel and bronze, which conform to his basic painterly principle but of the total single form.
