Painter and sculptor Ellsworth Kelly (b.1923 in Newburgh/N.Y. † 2015 in New York) was one of the main exponents of Hard Edge Painting and Minimal Art. Geometrical forms and primary colours with clear-cut edges, applied with a uniform, monochrome technique indicate a principle of pure form devoid of all figurative features. Since the 1960s his Shaped Canvasses in the form of wallfilling installations have been breaking the picture surface; they stand somewhere between picture, object and relief. Alongside these he made sculptures from wood and metal, which partly include the wall, but are partly freestanding. A Kelly retrospective covering 50 years in the New York Guggenheim Museum in 1996/97 was also shown in Los Angeles, London and Munich.
