The painter, sculptor, filmmaker and architect Per Kirkeby (b.1938 in Copenhagen d.2018 in Copenhagen) had a doctorate in geology, but in 1962 began a course in art at the Experimental Art School in Copenhagen, and in the years that followed took part in numerous performances (e.g. with Beuys, Nam June Paik). He made his first brick sculpture in 1973 in the form of a small house (Huset/ Urhaus). Kirkeby's œuvre in all its genres is determined by the reciprocal influences of nature, formality and art-historical models. His sculptures (since the early 1980s frequently in bronze) are a reflection on space in landscape and cityscape, as well as an investigation of the figure and abstraction.
