Slavs and Tatars is an art collective founded in 2006. For KölnSkulptur #8 they developed the idea of monumental prayer beads. Facing the park side, two lines of beads are growing out of the ground. Facing the river Rhine the lean shaft bands are visible. Slavs and Tatars see themselves as artist researchers, who trace the common roots of seperate cultural areas. They address questions of faith, religion and intercultural communication. Their thesis: Languages, gestures, rituals and goods have always been traversing the perceived borders between the East and the West. Prayer beads for example are used in the Abrahamic religions. They are objects that refer to language, to forms of self-referentiality and concepts of transcendence. They are connected to intimate ways of oral narrative and are clandestine companions of migration.
