The works of Magdalena Abakanowicz (b.1930 in Falenty/Poland † 2017 in Warsaw) bear the hallmark of peasant landscapes, Communism and Polish textile art. On her travels too, using sisal and resin alongside classical materials like bronze, stone and wood, she found a balance between natural mysticism and the expressive forms of modern art. Her forms are mostly monumental, amorphous and ambiguous. With her installations in public spaces (since ca. 1985) she touches in particular on supra-individual problems of being human. In 1965, for Abakans, she was awarded the Grand Prix at the São Paulo Biennale. In 2000 she was made a member of the Orden pour le mérite für Wissenschaft und Künste (pour le mérite order for science and the arts) in Berlin.
