Sir Anthony Caro (b.1924 in New Malden, Surrey † 2013 in London) was regarded as one of Modernism's most important sculptors in steel. After studying engineering in Cambridge and then sculpture, he was assistant to Henry Moore (1951-53). He became known above all for his abstract sculptures in monochrome H, T and L section steel joists, a clear departure from his figurative beginnings. His Sculpitectures (Forum, 1992/94) which experimented with architectural and sculptural form, look like models, yet are fullyfledged, functional works. Caro has been shown four times at the Venice Biennale, and also at documenta 3. He was given a retrospective in 2005 at Tate Britain in London.
