Jörg Immendorff (b. 1945 in Bleckede - d. 2007 in Düsseldorf) was undoubtedly one of the bestknown German artists, who from the mid-1960s had a definitive influence on the revival of figurative painting which had at that time been pronounced dead. The artist's conception of himself as a political factor within society expressed itself repeatedly in his pictures and sculptures. The LIDL pictures and actions demanded that art take an active role in the 1968 revolt; his Café Deutschland pictures took the division of Germany as their theme. Despite the realisation that art cannot intervene directly in social processes, his work retains its visionary character to this day.
