The painter, drawer and sculptor George Condo (b. 1957 in Concorde/New Hampshire) ranks alongside Basquiat, Haring and Schnabel, as one of the artists who have contributed to the renewal international painting since 1982. His often comic-like, grotesque portraits, executed in the manner of the old masters and anchored in indefinite space, refer back to precursors like Goya, Velázquez, Picasso, Dali and Bacon. The portrait is his favourite subject in sculpture, and the surprising pictorial solutions he finds for it offer amusing reflections on the art history of Modernism and Post-Modernism. In 1999 Condo received the Academy award in Art of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
