represented at KölnSkulptur 5
One of Germany's leading postwar sculptors, Norbert Kricke (b. 1922, d. 1984 in Düsseldorf, Germany) belongs to a generation of artists, who following their experiences in the Second World War, were inspired by the prospect of launching a radical new beginning. Both in the early stages of his career (approx. 1950) and subsequently in around 1975, he worked with emphatically Constructivistic structures. The Raumplastik Grosse F III originated from these years, in which Kricke became captivated by the potential of straight lines and clearly stated right angles. Confronting the observer is a self-supporting construct of stainless steel without a base. Initially circumscribing a linear angular course along the ground, it suddenly and rapidly bursts forth from the horizontal at the fourth bend before soaring skywards to reach its acme at a height of 10 metres. The emphatic thrust of this elevation dominates the site, and the sculpture impresses by virtue of its radiant power and intrinsic gestural manifestations.
