The hand-crafted design of this mighty wooden-beam construction by Olaf Holzapfel quotes a classical branch of carpentry art, while its sculptural form at the same time alludes to the constructivist models of utopian architecture. The structure includes serial forms that did not play a role in the history of sculpture till the 1960s. Thus this sculpture spans the bridge between sculpture and architecture, tradition and avant-garde. In relation to the nearby glass pavilion by Dan Graham, the contrasts and antitheses between these different concepts of space become especially distinct, and the question arises as to the characteristic features of architecture-related sculpture.

Olaf Holzapfel lives and works in Berlin.
